Where it all started

The activities of the International Building Association (IBO) started in Belgium in 1953 on the initiative of a priest, Father Werenfried van Straaten, to help refugees still living in very bad conditions after WWII. From the Christian values of forgiveness and solidarity, a lot of money was collected to help the Germans with the reconstruction of their country. Soon it became clear that it was necessary to build some emergency houses for the people that had no longer a home. That's how the Building association was born. Separate organisations were founded in several countries. In 1962 these came together in an international association, IBO. Nowadays IBO still functions as a framework for the cooperation between the members, thus promoting a good coordination of the activities. .

Work field

Europe and beyond The field of work of IBO is mainly in Europe, and since the fall of the Berlin Wall, especially Central-and Eastern Europe. During the old regimes there was often a lack of willingness to improve the living conditions of the socially weak, now there is often a lack of means and possibilities to do so. At the same time, poverty is a relative concept; in the so-called rich countries too people are set apart as a result of long term unemployment, drug and addiction problems, illness etc. Anyone who is excluded in one field will soon find that he is not welcome in other fields either. Nowadays, there are also projects in other parts of the world, for instance in Asia, Africa and South-America. Improvement of housing conditions IBO’s most important field of work is the improvement of the housing conditions of these people. Directly, or more often, indirectly by helping with the realisation of accommodation for organisations which help the underprivileged: homes for handicapped children, homes for the elderly, orphanages and hostels for the homeless. In this way a building, or improvements to it, is of benefit to many people. Other projects aim to improve the social conditions of people: organising activities for and taking care of children in a foster home, homeless or handicapped people and promoting ecological tourism. Philosophy IBO chooses to take on voluntary workers, so reducing the high costs and fitting in with IBO’s philosophy. This means the volunteers value the same things as IBO where respect, openness, reliability and quality are the most important. When volunteers from different countries work closely together with the locals, it contributes to the solidarity for one another and the cultural en social awareness of the volunteers. 'Willingness to help is the principle for a better world'.

Objectives

Why IBO? IBO aims to assist with the implementation of construction and social projects for people who need help, regardless of their race, nationality or philosophy. This aid is provided by volunteers who do short-term manual work. Cultural exchange By encouraging volunteers of different nationalities to work together and live with people in other countries, the IBO wants to assist in creating conditions for real peace between people and nations. Educational value Furthermore, it is IBO’s belief that these activities have an important educational value for the voluntary workers themselves and everyone who is directly or indirectly involved..

Austria

Where we come from The Dutch Father Werenfried van Straaten founded Bouworde in 1953. He motivated young people and students to help building homes for refugees in Germany and Austria. Bit by bit, independent Bouworde offices were established in many European countries. They united in a common network called International Building Organisation (IBO). In 1961, the Hilfsverein Österreichischer Bauorden was founded. More than 50 years For more than 50 years, the Austrian Bauorden organizes international youth meetings and aid projects in Europe and overseas. The organization has Christian humanitarian foundations. It supports social and religious organizations with the renovation of buildings or sends volunteers as assistants in the care for, and animation of people with special needs. The future Every year, about 80 Austrian volunteers (students, teachers, pensioners) work in social projects together with volunteers from many other countries. Together they travel to a country that is often unknown to them, where they work in exchange for board and simple lodging. The goal of a construction project is a social one in the first place. This means that voluntary work is an essential part of a common effort. Volunteers that join our projects have to be well aware of this..

Italy

Who we are IBO Italia is a nongovernmental organization from Christian inspiration that volunteers nationally and internationally. It is part of a network whose activities began in 1953 in northern Europe with the first labor camps created to reconstruct houses for refugees from World War II. IBO is the Flemish acronym for “Meeting International Builders.” Present in Italy since 1957, IBO was formed as an association in 1968 and is officially recognized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to carry out projects of international cooperation since 1972 (it was the first NGO in Italy to develop a cooperation project with the MFA). It is a member of the CCIVS of the Coordinating Committee for the International Civil Service at UNESCO since 1957 and is federated in Volunteers of the World VIDSE since 1972. Our History IBO Italia was founded in Italy in 1957 by Father Angelo Marcandella, a young religious man from the Congregation of Sacred Hearts and a son of Italian immigrants in Belgium. Father Angelo follows the movement, “Builder Members” since its inception in 1953 in Europe by another religious man, Father Werenfried van Straaten, better known as Bacon Priest. Bacon Priest some years earlier had founded the “oostpriesterhulp” or the “Church of Silence,” now known as “Help the Church in Need,” which was named this way because of its commitment to the poor and displaced Germans in the Second World War that escaped from bombed cities at the end of conflict and had flown to the borders of Belgium and the Netherlands. The Bacon Priest would go from house to house of the Flemish housewives and gather everything he could, especially bacon (hence his name), and then would distribute it to displaced families. One Sunday morning while celebrating Mass, he distributed prayer cards to the children and told them to put the cards on the walls of their homes. He saw a child cry and asked why he was crying. The child said, “we are one among five households in a warehouse, ours is in the center and does not have any walls.” This left the Father baffled and give birth to the movement of the “Builder Members.” The Bacon Priest decided to build houses for them with the help of many young people who began to arrive from all over Europe to give their own contribution. Work crews with “white overalls,” thanks to the donation of thousands of suits from a German paint company, invaded Europe, reaching even Italy. Their goal was to build homes for those who could not afford them. The first site of IBO Italia was in Cognola of Trento and then it moved onto Pontefract, Piacenza, Cesate, Casalpusterlengo, Cassana, and today, in the city center of Ferrara. Overtime, IBO Italia has undergone several transformations. It officially became an association in 1968 and a nongovernmental organization by 1972 when it carried out its first cooperation project in Zaire for the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In 1974, it was among the NGOs that founded the Volunteers in the World – CIDSE (International Cooperation for Development and Solidarity) and FOLM (Federation of Organizations of Lay Missionaries). To date IBO Italia can count numerous interventions in Latin American, Africa, Asia, and thousands of labor camps across Europe with the participation of tens of thousands of volunteers.
The Netherlands

About IBO-Nederland IBO-Nederland promotes cultural exchange and supports projects worldwide. The projects are carefully selected and all have a specific request for support of volunteers. Another important selection criterium is that projects are carried out by local, non-profit organizations. Volunteers (often young people) offer their short-term help to the projects in order for goals to be reached. At the same time, volunteers gain a lot of experience to return home with. These experiences can be on a personal level, based on new social and intercultural contacts, but also an improvement of their engineering skills. After one day of uncertainty and doubt, I never would have thought that these two great weeks would surpass all my expectations! - Gwenny Lindhout (project Ukraine). IBO-Nederland offers a combination of practical idealism and cultural exchange as an alternative to the often individualistic and competitive society. Because volunteers work in close cooperation with local communities, IBO contributes to the feeling of solidarity, increases mutual understanding and raises cultural and social awareness. Hard work in combination with interesting encounters and conversations, fun and beautiful trips, good food and cold showers. - Wytske van Genderen (project Albania) Who can volunteer with IBO? Dutch nationals between 18 and 99 years old can join a project. Everyone can volunteer, as long as they are enthusiastic, open-minded and have a good physical and mental health. Individual volunteers: Young and old, and all ages in between. Everyone can join. You can be real good in handling tools, gardening is totally your thing, or you are very clumsy but super social, there is always a suitable project for you. Most projects do not require specific skills or an educational background. Groups: If you are with four people or more, and you want to join a project together, that is possible! For example, if you are a teacher and you would like to go volunteering with your students, a group of colleagues, friends, family or your even a sports club, please contact us. We can provide a tailor made trip for you. Companies: If you are looking for a project that contributes to your company’s objectives regarding Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), please contact us. What can I do? IBO offers various types of projects: Building projects: You assist in practical work, for example refurbishing an orphanage or the construction of a children's playground. You usually do not need specific construction experience but if you are a good handyman, that will be appreciated too! Social projects: You support local staff in their social and caring tasks for, for instance, children, elderly, or people with disabilities. This can be in the area of personal care but also in organizing activities. Ecological projects: Your work will take place in a natural environment. To get an idea; you can help with the construction of footpaths in a national park or plant trees to prevent erosion. Our projects typically last between 1-4 weeks. Each year we offer over 70 different projects worldwide..

Switzerland

The Swiss Bauorden is, legally speaking, an association. According to its statutes, it supports people in need throughout the world. Seen from a moral / ethical perspective, the IBO Switzerland is far more than this: Namely, a relief organization, created based on the demand of the Gospel to assist fellow human beings in distress. For example, to build for them a roof over their heads. Or to clothe them. Or to feed them. "Love builds" is therefore more than just an advertising slogan for us - namely, the deepest reason for our service. We are clearly a Christian relief organization. It was created towards the end of the last world war. At that time, large parts of Europe had to be rebuilt. The help to fellow human beings can be done by: • Providing material support to retirement homes and homes for disabled in Eastern Europe (such institutions have been criminally neglected by the communist regime that unilaterally concentrated attention on human beings as sources of manpower) • Personal service of volunteers helping to build and renovate these welfare facilities. The interconnections of the European Bauorden are a valuable support for us at it..
